In feeling yesterday’s loss of Pope Francis, a beacon of light in so many ways, I wanted to write something about the inspiration I draw from his life.
It relates to what I see as one of the world’s biggest challenges: how do we create societal change more peacefully, constructively and with less bitter polarization?
In that regard, I see Pope Francis as being a great example of an evolutionary: someone who helped societal structures evolve in a peaceful, respectful way. A revolutionary typically wants to tear down or rebel against an older system. An evolutionary will seek to grow a system that already exists, creating new possibilities from within and building upon the wisdom inherent in the last design.
I believe that an evolutionary creates more lasting societal progress, which ultimately benefits us all. I want to honor Pope Francis for leaving that legacy of goodness, both in the Catholic Church and beyond.
Pope Francis,
Thank you for being a demonstration of love for all humanity.
Jesus offered us a powerful and difficult teaching to love everyone, and you have demonstrated that teaching in your words and deeds, showing love to each and every member of our global family.
You have walked with humility in a role of great power, guiding the spiritual lives of 1.4 billion people. You dedicated yourself to serving others, offering us a profound teaching in the sacred use of power.
You have shown a willingness to work within the boundaries of a religious culture while still helping it to evolve. That is why I see you as an evolutionary who leaves behind a more mature Church than when you arrived. You helped to carry it forward and better embody Jesus’ core teachings.
You gave generously of your time, attention, and care to so many. That dedication came through in the inspiring stories from your life, which always showed you going the extra mile to have people feeling seen.
If there is one message for me that you embodied beautifully it is to “love the divine essence at the core of every human being.” You have helped the world better see the poor, the marginalized, and the displaced as treasured members of our human family.
So thank you for the inspiration of your life and thank you for the example you gave us for our own leadership in the future.
May your blessings extend even wider from your new station and may we all continue to walk this earth with love for all.
with respect and appreciation,
Stephen Dinan
What a beautiful letter! Pope Francis most certainly was an evolutionary leader. Thank you for highlighting this most admirable and needed quality in a person, especially one who is on the world stage. From his “new station” may we all continue to feel his love and conviction and carry it forward here on earth. Thank you Stephen. Thank you Pope Francis 🕊️ and particularly on this day, Earth Day…Pope Francis thank you for caring about our wildlife, environment, ocean life and of course Mother Earth 🌏
A beautiful honouring for a beautiful soul. Thank you Stephen. As you said, Pope Francis was truly an evolutionary. May the next Poe continue in his footsteps.
